I’ve learned to write without fickle inspiration and rely on discipline and craft to produce stories. It’s more important to finish a draft than sit around and wait to be inspired.

This is one of the silver linings of always working toward a specific goal, on a lunatic schedule – I don’t have time to indulge frickin’ inspiration. I do it because it needs to get done now, and if it doesn’t need to get done right now, then I don’t worry about it. Inspiration, like sleep, is for the weak.
Nikki Alfar
I just kept drawing and writing until I finished the book. It was easier to market a finished story to a publiser as opposed to pitching unfinished ideas.
Arnold Arre
"I have posted online a couple times that you know you’re a PRO… A REAL PRO, when you can turn that juice on and off like a faucet. Or you can work regardless of inspiration or lack thereof.
A fireman still puts out fires regardless if how he feels that day."
Rod Espinosa
The point of writing, is to keep at it. If I stop after a story gets rejected, it would be easy to think that that would be my biggest failure. But if I keep going, keep writing, keep imagining, then, as corny as it sounds, it is merely a pause, a line break in the on-going narrative.
Kate Osias
I look at my favorite writers and artists, and I’ve read up on their stories, and I’ve listened to interviews on their very long struggle to eventually reach this place where they are actually writing comics or creating comics full time. And it took them a very long time before they could get to that point. And yes, it did involve writing every day, or putting your heart to this passion on a more regularly-scheduled basis, and not just leaving it to chance.

When you’re burnt out, it’s good to take a break from creating anything, but you can fall into the trap of having a reeaaally long hiatus and before you know it, your skills get rusty and it’ll take a while before you can get back into the groove again. Sometimes, you really just have to keep on pushing yourself, even if your artwork looks like crap. Knowing when to take a break and when to keep pushing can be quite tricky, but if you know yourself well enough, it’ll be easier to know when to step away (and for how long) and when to keep pushing.

The most helpful system I learned was shared by my mentor, Rory, this summer. She taught me about the Kanban system and the Pomodoro method. It really helped me with my concentration by almost 70-80%! I personally think it’s perfect for overthinkers because it breaks down the task into tangible, smaller bits. I finished a lot of backlogs this year because of those methods combined!
